PEP BOYS NATIONWIDE ROLLOUT

DLB served as the prototype design engineer for a national rollout of nearly 200 new stores and the renovation and expansion of another 250 stores.

Design elements included general HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and electrical system provisions in the sales, storage and service bay areas.

Additionally, DLB served as an extension of the corporate design staffs assisting with project management, scheduling, field conflict resolution and value engineering.



ICE TANK ROOM CONDENSATION ANALYSIS
FINANCIAL INSTITUTION

Ice storage tanks located in the basement of a large financial building in New York City had been serving as localized point of condensation since their installation in 2009.

This situation created an unsafe and unpleasant condition due to pooling water on the floor and the periodic introduction of excess moisture into mechanical areas. This moisture led to deterioration of some surface finishes in the immediate area of the basement and was responsible for moisture migration between adjacent areas.

Three practical approaches or Options for eliminating condensation in the Tank Room were presented:

  • Option 1.0: Elevate surface temperatures above the dewpoint temperature of any potential mixed air condition (OA + recirculated air) occurring in the space.
  • Option 2.0: Depress the dewpoint temperature of any potential mixed air condition (OA + recirculated air) occurring in the space to below the temperature of any surface in the space.
  • Option 2.1: Instead of using chilled brine from the "low pressure" side of the system to create low DP discharge air, a direct expansion (DX) dehumidification / reheat system can be utilized.

In addition to the initial capital investment and recurring annual energy costs, other factors were presented for consideration:

  • Impact on the existing thermal storage system capacity
  • Resulting level of comfort
  • Ease of construction
